One of the most famous landmarks of the Hanseatic city are the Town Musicians of Bremen. 1819 the Brothers Grimm sent four animals on a journey to the Hanseatic city and they subsequently became known as the Town Musicians of Bremen.
Although they never reached Bremen, but on their way to the Hanseatic city drove a gang of robbers from their house and then remained there themselves, the bronze statue by Gerhard Marcks reminds passers-by of this well-liked tale since 1953. Together, with courage and strong cohesion the virtually impossible can be accomplished, that is what this tale of animal friends tells us.
Every day visitors from around the world flock to this bronze statue of approximately 2 meters in height standing on the western side of the Bremen Town Hall. Touching the donkey, dog, cat and rooster is said to bring luck.
You had much better go with us to Bremen [...] at any rate that will be better than dying, is one of the most famous sentences from the tale. Bremen, starting point for many who wanted to emigrate to the new world in order to seek a better life and find their luck there.
Today the animal quartet symbolises Bremen just as much as the Weser, the cathedral, the town hall and the harbour.
